Etymology:

  • Earlier in 19th century, this expression was “the boot is on the other leg”. It is quite surprising to note that since 19th century there was no definite right or left shoes or boots. People could put either one on either foot; ultimately the shoes would fit or take the shape of that foot. If by chance you put wrong shoe in wrong foot, then it will be a reverse situation. If master becomes slave or slave becomes master, then the “shoe is on the other foot”.
